The Farming Spade, a sculpture by Roger Vieillard (1907-1989) in Sèvres Porcelain

By Roger Vieillard (1907–1989), a highly renowned postwar French engraver. I am offering you a remarkable tabletop sculpture titled “La Pelle agricole,” emblematic of this great artist’s long collaboration with the prestigious Manufacture nationale de Sèvres in the 1970s and 1980s.
The sculpture I am offering here was previously part of the artist’s own collection and comes from the sale of his studio. It has been loaned to numerous exhibitions and is well-documented in the literature.
Let’s discuss this remarkable sculpture, crafted from porcelain glazed in a deep cobalt blue and delicately decorated with gold in rustic motifs: it is signed and dated 1975 within the design, bears the Sèvres Manufactory stamp, and features a label reading “Pelle Vieillard Bleu 12.74.” (H. 32 cm). Its base is made of patinated brass. This is an original creation and a rarity on the market.
A comparable piece is held in the collection of the National Ceramics Museum in Sèvres (inv. MNC 25468).
