A precocious artist, Robert-Antoine Pinchon painted this work before he had reached the age of twenty. At just nineteen, he held his first solo exhibition at the Legrip Gallery in Rouen and exhibited at the Salon d’Automne in Paris in 1905, the year of the famous “Cage aux Fauves”.
He had already attracted the attention of the celebrated collector François Depeaux, who acquired numerous works by the young artist, some of which would later become part of his donation to the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rouen.
Executed with highly divided brushwork, this painting demonstrates the remarkable skill of the young artist. Its delicate harmonies of mauve and blue foreshadow the refined palette of this great colourist, which would remain a defining feature of his work throughout his career.
