This rare work by Pierre Hodé, Still Life with a Pipe, painted in 1920, belongs to the artist’s early “Cubist” compositions.
Hodé playfully constructs a composition in which the objects depicted — a piece of bread, a glass filled with wine and two pears — appear, at first sight, to have no connection with the title of the painting. Yet the shape of a pipe seems to emerge from the combination of the glass and the piece of bread, as though the absent object were suggested rather than represented.
This approach offers a striking, though very different, echo of René Magritte’s work. A few years later, Magritte would paint a pipe beneath which he wrote “Ceci n’est pas une pipe” (“This is not a pipe”), setting the painted image against the reality of the object. In Pierre Hodé’s case, the process is almost reversed: it is not the represented object that is challenged by the title, but the title itself that refers to an object absent from the composition.
