Important and elegant pair of finely chased bronze candelabra, resting on an allegorical composition of vestals draped in the antique manner, inspired by Greco-Roman aesthetics.
Each candelabrum is composed of a standing female figure in patinated bronze, dressed in a long classical drapery and holding above her head a shaft supporting a rich gilt bronze light structure.
The two figures form a strictly symmetrical pair, intended to be displayed on either side of a fireplace, sideboard, or architectural feature.
The figures represent idealized vestals, symbols of purity and solemnity in ancient Rome. Their faces are delicately modeled with soft, classical features; their hair is arranged in an antique-style chignon; and the deeply carved drapery highlights the quality of the casting and chasing. Their noble, hieratic posture is characteristic of 19th-century Neoclassicism. The dark patina of the bronze enhances the volumes and contrasts harmoniously with the bright gilding of the light arms.
The vestals stand on circular stepped bases richly decorated with bas-relief friezes inspired by antiquity, depicting Roman-draped figures, procession scenes, sacrificial animals such as a bull, and mythological motifs. These friezes reflect craftsmanship directly inspired by Greco-Roman reliefs rediscovered in the 18th century.
At the top, each candelabrum is crowned with a central vase from which rise six finely chased gilt bronze light arms with leafy scrolls, volutes, palmettes, and scrolling foliage, with candle sockets shaped to imitate candles. The ensemble is executed in mercury-gilt bronze, offering a rich brilliance and elegant contrast with the dark patinated figures.
Dimensions:
Total height: 100 cm with candles (90 cm without candles)
The width is proportionate to the height, giving the pair a strong decorative presence without visual heaviness.
These candelabra fully reflect the 19th-century Neoclassical taste, in the tradition of the Empire style and the Second Empire period, both particularly fond of antique references. They evoke the productions of the great Parisian bronziers of the 19th century, created for aristocratic and bourgeois clientele and intended for grand reception interiors.
Very good overall condition:
– even, old patina
– well-preserved gilding
– later discreet electrification (can be converted back to candle use if desired)
With their exceptional height of 100 cm, the quality of their chasing, and the elegance of their composition, this pair of vestal candelabra constitutes a major decorative piece, ideal for a monumental fireplace, a large classical salon, a gallery, or a private mansion interior.
A spectacular decorative ensemble combining sculptural strength, refinement, and classical inspiration.
