18th century cartonnier with clock

A rare and remarkable filing cabinet forming a storage piece with integrated clock, French work from the 18th century, of very fine quality.

This display piece features a lively and elegantly curved silhouette, characteristic of the Louis XV rocaille taste, with a particularly refined serpentine outline. The upper section houses an integrated clock with an enamel dial and blue Roman numerals, set within a richly chased gilt bronze frame decorated with foliage and scrolls.

The carcass is veneered in precious woods—satinwood and plumwood, kingwood and amaranth—arranged in butterfly-wing and chevron marquetry, offering beautiful reflections and a warm brown mahogany patina.

The ornamentation is particularly refined, with numerous original gilt bronze mounts: corner mounts, clasps, sabots, moulded frames, rocaille scrolls, and foliate motifs, elegantly enhancing the overall structure.

The front opens with a curved glazed door, revealing an interior fitted with five shaped shelves / filing compartments, highlighted with gilt bronze trims, originally intended for storing documents, papers, or sheet music, making this piece both decorative and functional.

The door retains its original lock with its original bronze key.

The clock movement, housed in the upper section, is accessible via an independent glazed door, allowing access for winding and maintenance. The movement is later, in working order and striking. Some enamel losses are visible on certain numerals.

The sides, also curved, are richly veneered and decorated with reserves highlighted by gilt bronze stringing, demonstrating a particularly luxurious treatment on all faces, allowing the piece to be displayed in the centre of a room.

Very good overall condition, with superb varnish and bronze quality.

Parisian work, Louis XV period, 18th century.

A rare piece with strong decorative presence, ideal for a gallery, a collector’s cabinet, or a refined classical interior.

Dimensions: Height 140 cm, Width 89 cm, Depth 40 cm.

No stamp found, though it would merit one.
