mahogany wine cooler by Canabas

Curved mahogany veneer wine cooler by Joseph Gengenbach Canabas.

It opens with a drawer in the belt with a gilt bronze ring pull and features a basin-shaped top on which are set two silver-plated bottle holders and two long oval storage compartments.
It is supported by four molded, cambered, and uncoated legs, joined by two crotch shelves with concave sides. The legs end in gilt bronze-encased sabots resting on casters.

Transitional period work stamped by Canabas, and JME.

This model is typical of that of Canabas (1715-1717), who became a master in 1766. Its lines are clean but finely crafted, the mahogany is a beautiful red, the legs are offset, typical of Canabas, and the back is very curved.

A similar model can be found in the highly acclaimed "French Furniture of the 18th Century" by Pierre Kjellberg, p. 164, with the difference being a white marble top and a single shelf between the legs.
