An elegant pair of Louis XVI armchairs "à la reine" stamped SENÉ, crafted from finely carved and gilded beechwood and featuring decoration of twisted ribbons, foliage, and acanthus leaf tips.
The arched on "chapeau de gendarme" backrests flow into armrests with upholstered pads that terminate in elegant scrolls. The concave arm supports rest on fluted blocks surmounting corner blocks adorned with rosette motifs, characteristic elements of XVIIIth century decorative design.
The seat rail, flared and curved at the front, rests on tapered legs featuring stop-fluting and terminating in turned feet. The seat is fitted with a cushion.
Admitted as a master craftsman in 1769, Sené is regarded as one of the finest chair makers of his era. His work is distinguished by the quality of its proportions and the excellence of its carving. From 1785 onwards, he became a supplier to the *Garde-Meuble de la Couronne* (Crown Furniture Repository), creating seating for royal residences such as Versailles, Saint-Cloud, and Fontainebleau.
A superb example of Louis XVI craftsmanship, bearing the stamps of Sené and the JME (Jurande des Menuisiers-Ébénistes) guild mark.
