Frans Schwartz trained at the Royal Academy in Copenhagen between 1866 and 1872, and began exhibiting at the Charlottenborg Salon in 1874. Specializing mainly in religious painting and large-scale decorations for churches and state buildings, he also produced portraits and nude studies. Highly self-critical of his painting, rather aloof from artistic trends and solitary in nature, he nevertheless created an independent art school, which was intended as a reaction against academic teaching. The end of his career was marked by significant activity as an engraver.

Frans Schwartz's sensitive personality is perfectly expressed in this gentle, subtle portrait, which also reflects his preference for depicting faces in profile or three-quarter view.
