An emblematic painter of the Provençal School, Jean-Baptiste Olive devoted much of his career to the coastlines of Marseille, capturing with remarkable sensitivity their changing light and maritime atmosphere. Born in Marseille in 1848, he remains one of the foremost French marine painters of his era, celebrated for his depictions of the Mediterranean shoreline and the city's historic Old Port.
This composition presents a view of the Port of Marseille from the island of Les Eyglaudes, off the northern coast of the harbour. In the foreground, pale rocks washed by sea foam lead the eye toward the deep waters rendered in rich blue tones. On the horizon, port facilities and shoreline buildings emerge, subtly enlivened by the presence of a sailing vessel at anchor.
Olive's free and vibrant brushwork, combined with a refined palette of blues, ochres, and whites, conveys the rugged character of the Marseille coastline and the ceaseless movement of the sea. This work perfectly illustrates the artist's attachment to his native city and its shores, subjects that rank among the most sought-after themes in his oeuvre.
