Georges-Frédéric Rötig, a French painter and draughtsman, established himself as a major figure in animal painting at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
Born in Paris in 1873, he developed an early fascination with both wild and domestic animals, which would become the central theme of his work.
He trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he studied under such renowned masters as Léon Bonnat and Jean-Léon Gérôme, two leading figures of French academic realism.
Throughout his career, Rötig distinguished himself through his remarkably precise observation of the animal world. His drawings reveal both a thorough understanding of anatomy and an exceptional ability to capture the attitudes, movements and character of his subjects.
In this Study of Dogs, the combination of pencil and white chalk allows the artist to model the animals with great subtlety, using highlights to suggest the texture of their coats and give volume and vitality to their forms.
