17th & 18th centuries Furniture and Statuary
This delightful small cabinet exemplifies the elegance of Italian craftsmanship in the 17th century.
It is crafted from ebonized pearwood, ebony, and engraved bone, featuring a beautifully architectural façade that opens to reveal seven drawers—with the bottom row forming a single wide drawer—and a door concealing four additional drawers.
The engraved bone ornamentation follows a geometric rhythm, centering on a depiction of Orpheus holding his lyre.
The drawer decorations illustrate how, through this musical instrument, Orpheus could charm not only men and gods but also animals, plants, and even trees and rocks, which would rush to gather around him.
A Greek key frieze frames and highlights this charming decorative scheme.
The cornices feature intricate guilloché carving executed in precious ebony.
This cabinet was designed for travel; it served to store the jewelry, documents, and other personal items a nobleman would take with him. Yet, through its decorative refinement and the richness of its materials, it also symbolizes the magnificence of its wealthy owner.
