Important pair of Regency wall lights attributed to Charles Cressent

An elegant pair of Regency period wall sconces in finely chased and gilded bronze, each with two candle arms, adorned with a rich decoration of flowing scrolls and exquisitely crafted figures of children draped in the antique style.

These two children each hold a torch. One is dressed in a tunic with a strong drapery, representative of classical art; the other, bare-chested, is simply draped at the waist. Their bodies are transformed at the lower part by a splendid bouquet of foliage and flowers, very finely chased.

In their hands, torches rise majestically, coiling around their waists and winding towards the sky, decorated with acanthus leaves in volutes, distinguished by their elegant movement and the fine chasing work.
The candle cups are decorated with a large open flower with drooping petals, striated on the underside. They are topped with small candle holders decorated with a chiseled flower bud at the base.

This highly sculptural, almost theatrical design is characteristic of the finest Parisian models from the mid-18th century.
This pair of wall sconces is particularly interesting for its finely crafted decoration of antique children, a style that can be attributed to Charles Cressent, one of the greatest ornamental cabinetmakers and bronze workers, but also for the harmony of its asymmetrical, flowing arms, and especially for its height of 54 cm, which gives it a more substantial presence than many other sconces from the Regency period.

Regency period work attributed to Charles Cressent, in its beautiful original gilding.
Charles Cressent (1685-1768) became a master sculptor in 1714 and an ornamental sculptor specializing in bronze art in 1719. He then became cabinetmaker to the Regent, the Duke of Orléans, and thus one of the most renowned cabinetmakers of his time, crafting furniture with rocaille bronze ornamentation highly prized by the high aristocracy.

Usual restoration and maintenance.
