The Companions of Marjol, Aubusson tapestry after Dom Robert (20th century)

Important Aubusson tapestry, "The Companions of the Marjoram" design after Dom Robert (20th century)

We present a remarkable Aubusson tapestry in wool, woven on a low-warp loom, based on one of the most poetic and sought-after designs by Dom Robert (Guy de Chaunac-Lanzac, 1907-1997): "The Companions of the Marjoram."

The work perfectly illustrates the modernized "mille-fleurs" style of the artist, a Benedictine monk from the Abbey of En Calcat, who revolutionized the art of tapestry in the 20th century. The scene depicts two stylized horses moving through lush nature, punctuated by vibrantly colored wildflowers and butterfly motifs.

Characteristics & Authenticity
Signature: The artist's signature, "D. ROBERT," is fully woven into the warp in the lower left corner of the piece.

Technique: High-quality hand-woven tapestry. The reverse side reveals the reinforcing threads and the structure of the hand weaving, characteristic of the Aubusson weavers' expertise.

Condition: Exceptional. The colors have retained remarkable freshness and contrast. The wool is sound, and the weave tension is perfect.

An iconic piece of the French tapestry revival, combining medieval tradition with contemporary design.

"The tapestry is in superb condition but no longer has its selvedge, as is often the case after cleaning or a lining replacement. However, it is an authentic Aubusson tapestry, as evidenced by the signature woven into the warp."
