Dish in Deruta majolica (Italy) with Saint Francis of Assis, 16th c.

Round ceremonial dish in Deruta majolica (Italy) with polychrome decoration in the center depicting Saint Francis of Assisi receiving the stigmata. Saint Francis is shown in three-quarter view on the right, one knee on the ground, receiving his wounds from a crucifix. In the background are a mountain and the city of Assisi. On the rim, four compartments alternating between foliage scrolls and interlocking scale motifs separated by plain braiding.
First third of the 16th century.
Diameter: 41 cm. Tiny chip visible on the rim.
See Jeanne Giacometti, Catalogue des majoliques des musées nationaux,
no. 604, page 187, for a similar decoration, Ed. des Musées Nationaux, Paris, 1974. The Louvre Museum has a dish with the same decoration, but Saint Francis is facing the opposite direction. Inv. OA1625 Acq. Campana 1861.
