17th & 18th centuries Furniture and Statuary
Carved in Burgundy in the 15th century, this Virgin of Calvary was placed to the right of Christ, mirroring Saint John at the foot of the cross.
The Virgin is depicted standing in a frontal pose. She inclines her head slightly to the left. Her facial expression is restrained, imbued with great gentleness and profound wisdom.
Her veil, forming a cloak, a fold of which she holds in her right hand, cascades down in ample, rounded folds.
Several characteristics allow us to attribute this sculpture to the Burgundian workshops of Jean de la Huerta, an Aragonese sculptor primarily active in the Duchy of Burgundy in the mid-15th century. Our sculpture features slightly open eyes with lowered eyelids and low brow ridges, a straight nose, and a mouth framed by dimples, as well as a tendency towards broadened forms and heavy drapery.
