Urbino Maiolica Dish, Second Half of the 16th Century

Duchy of Urbino : Circular Maiolica Dish with Mythological Scene of Ulysses and Ajax Probably Fontana workshop, second half of the 16th century, circa 1560–1570
Diameter: 26.4 cm
Tin-glazed earthenware dish (maiolica) with full polychrome decoration (a pieno), depicting a mythological scene of Ulysses and Ajax in a military encampment. The composition features armed men before a set of armor, including a plumed helmet and lance resting on the ground. The reverse bears the Latin inscription “Ulise e Ajace”, identifying the protagonists. The stylistic and narrative qualities suggest attribution to the renowned Fontana workshop in Urbino, active during the golden age of istoriato maiolica.
