This elegant 18th-century Neapolitan terracotta figure represents one of the Magi—most likely Balthazar—standing in a dignified and solemn pose. Finely modeled and polychrome, it embodies the refinement of devotional art from southern Italy. The figure, draped in an ermine-lined cloak, wears a delicately crafted crown and turban. His expressive face, along with the richness of his garments and accessories such as the censer, reflect both the quality of the piece and the skill of its maker.
This singular work belongs to the tradition of Neapolitan nativity scenes, where each figure contributed to a vivid tableau that was both popular in character and deeply spiritual in nature.
