small table stamped by Charles Topino, Louis XVI period

Small Louis XVI period table, stamped Charles Topino (master on July 4, 1773)

This small rectangular table, made primarily of rosewood, features a full-face marquetry of lemonwood surrounded by amaranth netting and framed by beaded gilt bronze rods. It is decorated with floral garlands of stained sycamore, creating a delicate harmony of contrast between the woods.

This apron conceals a drawer with a beaded medallion keyhole topped with a gilt bronze knot. When opened, it reveals a top covered in green leather gilded with a small iron. This top is movable to reveal a storage compartment. On the left side are three silver-plated inkwell recesses. This drawer, which acts as a writing desk, underscores the importance of this small piece of furniture as a small writing table.

The upper surface is made of white Carrara marble, encircled by an openwork gilt bronze gallery with a small bridge. A clover-shaped openwork gallery frames the crotch shelf, itself enhanced by fine marquetry decorated with a large floral bouquet in stained sycamore on a rosewood background, framed by boxwood trim.

The uprights are adorned with gilt bronze trim, finely chiseled with floral motifs.
The sheathed legs are subtly arched at the top and enhanced with a gilt bronze ring chiseled in a heart shape.

They terminate in gilt bronze feet mounted on casters.

This small writing table perfectly illustrates Topino's fine work from the Louis XVI period, combining refined lines, choice of wood contrasts, and decorative enhancement with delicate floral marquetry; a mastery of stylistic and technical refinement.

Louis XVI period work stamped TOPINO.
