Six-Panel Japanese screen of Moghols hunting 17/18th century

Using ink and natural color pigments, we can distinguish numerous Tartar warriors hunting as well as falconers on horseback. On the rightmost panels, a lake and rice fields, a variety of wild birds, all against a background of mountains, waterfalls and trees in the style of the Kano school interspersed with clouds gold and gold spots.

These Tartars (moghols or Tatars) are identifiable by their dashing equestrian poses, their banners, prominent weapons and fur-trimmed hats are very distinctive. Some examples of this type of screens are preserved in Japanese and American collections. One of the first known is in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and attributed to the artist Kano Eitoku (1543-1590), shows Tartar envoys paying homage (inv. no. 11.4450)...
