Bronze subject representing a galloping elephant, it is the famous model "elephant of Senegal in the race" by Antoine Louis Barye (1796-1875).
Rare subject in bronze (small model). Beautiful black patina, old cast of the XIXth century by Barbedienne. Numbers of collection in the pen below.
Antoine Louis Barye is one of the greatest animal sculptors of the French XIXth century. He started his training as a sculptor with Bosio and as a painter with Baron Gros, the greatest masters of the classical period. He quickly distinguished himself from his masters and contemporaries by creating very realistic animal sculptures (rather than the idealized models then in use) and became a precursor of the naturalist movement. He was successful from the second half of the 19th century. A large part of his work is made up of small subjects like our elephant, destined for amateur cabinets.
Our bronze is presented on its original 19th century base, covered with worn red velvet. The bronze is in excellent condition.
