A rare gold mounted rose quartz snuff box of a masked Harlequin.
The mask of the miscreant is made from onyx & set with diamond eyes.
The pierced & repoussé gold base is decorated with a putto playing drums whilst surrounded by instruments.
The rim of the mount is enamelled with the words ‘Groyez a mon devouement’ which translates as ‘Believe in my dedication’.
This highly Rococo box was made to represent the pleasures of life with allegories of Love, Theatre & Music.
The gold mount is marked twice with indistinct marks, possibly to show that import duty had been paid.
French, possibly 19th century, in the 18th century manner.
Measures 8 x 4.5 x 4cm.
