A majestic and elegant figurative bronze candelabra with a patina, signed E. Picault, a work by the famous French sculptor Émile Louis Picault (1833–1915), dating from the late 19th century or the very early 20th century. The composition depicts a graceful, classically inspired female figure standing in an elegant contrapposto pose. Clad in a classical drape with richly modeled folds, she holds a large decorative torch resting on her shoulder. Her serene face, finely crafted hairstyle, delicately modeled hands, and the particularly meticulous rendering of the drapery attest to the high quality of this sculpture’s execution. The torch, richly ornamented in the Neo-Greek style, features geometric friezes and motifs inspired by antiquity. It is topped by a spectacular frosted glass shade shaped like a flame, which diffuses a warm light and lends the entire piece a particularly theatrical presence when lit. The dark brown patina of the bronze, with its natural nuances and subtle variations, beautifully highlights the reliefs and the delicacy of the modeling. The sculpture bears the signature “E. Picault” on the base. Émile Louis Picault (1833–1915) was a leading figure in French sculpture during the second half of the 19th century. His work is particularly known for its allegorical, mythological, and historical subjects, often inspired by antiquity and associated with themes of knowledge, light, progress, and victory.
