This large-scale canvas masterfully recreates one of the most dramatic and iconic chapters of Westernization in Russian history — the forced shaving of traditional beards and the cutting of old-style long-skirted garments under the decrees of Tsar Peter the Great (issued in 1698 and 1705).
Set against a snow-covered fortress backdrop, the painting depicts Peter's soldiers carrying out the Tsar’s reforms at a city gate. Von Urlaub brilliantly captures the psychological tension of the scene: the rigid determination of the modernizing military and the deep personal tragedy of the traditional boyars and citizens whose centuries-old lifestyle is being systematically dismantled.

Provenance & Publications

The painting has a well-documented place in Russian art history. It was published as a full-page reproduction in the famous pre-revolutionary illustrated art magazine "Sever" (The North, No. 4, 1893) under its full title.

Historical works by Georg von Urlaub regarding Petrine reforms are exceptionally rare on the private art market. His major pieces are held in the most prestigious state institutions, including the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow and the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg.

Documentation

The artwork is sold with an extensive official expertise report from the A. Benois Central Bureau of Independent Expertise (dated 16.06.2024). The expertise was conducted and signed by Lyudmila Andrushchenko, a senior curator at the I.E. Repin State Museum-Estate "Penaty" and a member of the Association of Art Historians (AIS). The document fully authenticates the authorship, dating, and extraordinary museum value of the canvas.
