Kodansu Cabinet – Hakone Marquetry & Matsuyama Bronzes, Meiji (1868–1912)

A rare, collectible Kodansu tabletop cabinet, crafted during the Meiji period specifically for the European luxury market. Behind the two hinged doors lies an asymmetrical configuration of 7 drawers. This piece masterfully combines two great Japanese crafts: the legendary Yosegi-zaiku marquetry from Hakoné and the imperial-quality metal chasing from the Matsuyama workshops.
The doors, drawer fronts, and top panel are decorated with exquisite relief appliques made of gilded bronze and mixed-metal alloys (depicting birds, flowers, butterflies, and a scarab beetle). The circular top medallion features a hand-chiseled authentic signature of master Matsuyama.

• Period: Japan, Meiji era (c. 1880-1890)
• Materials: Precious woods, patinated and gilded bronze, mixed-metal alloys.
• Dimensions: Height: 26 cm | Depth: 19 cm | Width (closed): 21.5 cm | Width (open): 43 cm
• Condition: Excellent original condition. Complete with its two original authentic keys (the lock is fully functional). Beautiful age-appropriate patina; doors and drawers operate smoothly.
