Japanese porcelain tokkuri. European mount. Arita, 17th century.
Made of hard-paste porcelain and decorated with cobalt blue oxide, this tokkuri was created in the Arita kilns around 1670-80 for the European market. It is a rare example with its silver mount. The Kyushu Porcelain Museum houses a tokkuri of identical form, which is illustrated as number 1541 in the Shibata Collection catalogue. The mount does not conceal the damage that is often the case; a photograph shows the upper rim intact. There are three hallmarks which should allow for dating the mount. Numerous craquelures are typical of Arita kilns of this period. No repairs.
Height: 25 cm.
