A popular leisure destination, Dieppedalle and Croisset are two small hamlets located downstream from Rouen. Easily accessible by steamboats—used much like buses today—they attracted artists and visitors in search of inspiring scenery.
Many painters, such as Narcisse Guilbert and, as in this case, Narcisse Hénocque, frequently set up their easels there, drawn by the views along the Seine.
The site of Croisset is also closely associated with Gustave Flaubert, for whom it was a central place of literary creation. He led a secluded life there, entirely devoted to writing, with extreme rigor
