"Ecce Homo" is the famous phrase uttered by Pontius Pilate as he presented Jesus, scourged and crowned with thorns, to the Jewish crowd.
(From the Gospel of St. John)
This highly evocative painting depicts "Christ Crowned with Thorns" and is one of the most famous creations by the great Bolognese master Guido Reni, a model for many of his contemporaries.
It is considered one of the most significant images of ancient religious art, so much so that it has become a symbol of Christianity.
Christ's face is alive and expressive, capable of conveying the human suffering of the "God made Man" who raises his eyes and turns his bewildered gaze toward the Father to plead with him in a moment of despair.
Reni's Ecce Homo, in all its variations, immediately achieved enormous success, especially for its particular suitability for private settings for domestic devotion.
Indeed, while conveying an evidently dramatic message, it was far removed from the exaggerated depictions of Christ's face completely disfigured and covered in blood dripping from the crown of thorns.
This work, executed by a talented 17th-century Emilian artist, is an excellent example. Drawing inspiration from Reni's subjects, he captures their artistic essence,
injecting a highly personal touch of lightness into the facial expression.
The artist of this painting undoubtedly possesses an excellent hand, imparting precise and vigorous brushstrokes to the canvas.
Using a strong contrast of light and shadow, with accentuated golden tones, he manages to give the painting a halo of supernatural light.
The work is in perfect condition, complete with a large, thick gilded frame.
