Madonna with Child and Goldfinch, Italy first half of 14th century

Tempera and gold on slightly curved poplar wood (64x45,6cm) attributed to Giovanni di Nicola, ca.1330 (Tuscany: active in Pisa & Siena). This attribution was made by Professor Emeritus Gaudenz Freuler (Universität Zürich, Kunsthistorisches Institut, Italienische Kunst des Mittelalters und der Renaissance mit Schwerpunkt Malerei). Please contact us if you would like to have a copy of his 12-page analysis of this painting.
The C14 dating report by KIK/IRPA (Koninklijk Instituut voor het Kunstpatrimonium/Institut Royal du Patrimoine Artistique) dates the wood between 1120 and 1230 AD (also available on request).
The goldfinch Jesus holds anticipates his future sacrifice. According to one legend, the birds acquired their distinctive red spot after one plucked a thorn from Christ’s crown and was splashed with blood.
