Offered by Marc Menzoyan
Pair of fauns seated face to face, seemingly conversing in a relaxed atmosphere. Gilt bronze group mounted on a molded white marble base. Signatures JOE DESCOMPS on each side of the base. Period 1930/1940, original gilding showing some oxidation consistent with age, with precise chasing in the details. The founder-publisher Barbedienne is very likely the editor of this work under the title “Confidences”; a version also exists in which the figures are presented separately.
Dimensions of the bronze without the marble base: Length 31 cm, width 11 cm, height 18 cm.
Joseph-Jules Emmanuel Cormier, known as Joe Descomps, was born in 1869 in Clermont-Ferrand. This sculptor exhibited his first works at the Salon of 1883 and became a member of the Société des Artistes Français. Working in various materials such as marble, bronze, terracotta, and ivory in his studio located in La Charité-sur-Loire, he received numerous distinctions and produced models for the Sèvres manufactory.
