Sèvres manufactory, 1764
Dimensions: cup height 6.6 cm; diameter 7.9 cm — saucer diameter 13.5 cm
This finely painted cup and saucer set was produced at the Sèvres manufactory in 1764, as indicated by the date letter “L” and the painter's marks. The work is attributed to Antoine-Joseph Chappuis (active 1761–1787), a specialist in floral and bird decoration, and Jean-Louis Morin (active 1754–1787), known for his compositions, bird painting, and genre scenes.
The saucer features an owl perched in a tree, symbolizing vigilance or foresight. On the cup, a colorful bird appears poised to hunt; on the reverse, it is shown in flight, creating a visual narrative. The twisted handle evokes the form of a natural branch, in harmony with the landscape theme.
Accented with blue enamel bands and gilt borders, this piece reflects the refined naturalistic taste of 18th-century porcelain art.
Condition: Excellent overall; slight rubbing to the gilt edge.
