Pierre Fichet is one of the most spiritual representatives of post-war French lyrical abstraction. From the 1950s onwards, as part of the Second School of Paris, he contributed to the emergence of an abstract language centred on verticality, inner energy and light.
Produced in 1967, this painting from the Tableaux Sanglants series encapsulates a powerful symbolism.
A dark background, with almost meditative modulations, is pierced by a single, intense, sharp vermilion-red gesture, bordered by a bare white line.
The tension between the apparent brutality of the form and the pictorial silence of the surface gives this canvas a rare intensity.
The contrast between matter and emptiness, energy and restraint, engages the eye in a visual meditation.
