An exquisite French Empire mantel clock in finely chased and fire-gilt bronze, depicting Ceres, the Roman goddess of agriculture and fertility. She is seated atop a sheaf of wheat, framed by a laurel wreath, holding a sickle in one hand and a bundle of wheat in the other — timeless symbols of abundance and harvest. The figure is sculpted with great finesse, featuring a graceful pose, delicately rendered drapery, and a serene, classical countenance.
The rectangular base is richly adorned with high-relief gilt-bronze appliqués, including winged griffins flanking a flaming urn, laurel wreaths, acanthus foliage, and mascarons of river gods pouring stylised water — an allegory of nature’s bounty.
The white enamel dial with Roman numerals is signed:
Drouot / Rue du Roule à Paris,
and has two winding holes. The movement features an anchor escapement with pendulum suspension and strikes the hours and half-hours on a bell. The mechanism is housed within a superbly crafted case with a hinged rear door.
An exceptional example of early 19th-century Empire clockmaking, where technical mastery, classical mythology, and refined bronze artistry converge in perfect harmony.
