Claude Venard is one of the leading exponents of the Second School of Paris. A post-Cubist, he developed a personal pictorial language in which matter and colour structure space more than they describe it.
In ‘Le Chenal’, the composition is built around a spiral movement, evoking a stylised port and its marine flows. Dominant shades of blue, red and white collide in a striking visual rhythm.
The film is built up in successive shots and makes extensive use of black.
