Mythological pair of patinated bronze busts “Mars and Mercury”

A finely executed mythological pair of 19th-century patinated bronze busts depicting the Roman deities Mars and Mercury, rendered with a rich, nuanced brown patina that beautifully enhances their classical features. Each figure is mounted on a gilded bronze socle set atop a base of rouge griotte marble, offering a striking contrast in both material and tone.


Mars, one of the most important gods in the Roman pantheon, was revered not only as the formidable god of war but also as a guardian of agriculture and fertility. As the son of Jupiter and Juno, Mars held a preeminent place among the military deities of Rome. The month of March (Martius) is named in his honour. Seen as a progenitor of the Roman people, Mars was mythologically father to Romulus and Remus, born of his union with the Vestal virgin Rhea Silvia. His sacred animal, the she-wolf, features prominently in Rome’s foundational mythos. Under the cultural influence of Greek mythology, Mars came to be equated with Ares.


In Roman mythology, Mercury was venerated as the swift-footed messenger of the gods and the patron of commerce, eloquence, communication, travel, boundaries, and fortune; he also guided souls to the underworld. His divine attributes are the winged sandals (talaria), winged helmet, and caduceus (a serpent-entwined staff). Mercury corresponds to the Greek god Hermes.


This sculptural pair is distinguished by its exceptional craftsmanship and naturalistic detailing, imbuing both figures with vitality and classical nobility. The original patina displays a warm, dynamic depth that enhances the expressive modelling. They have been preserved in a very good condition.
