Félix-Henri Auvray depicts two dozing children, one tenderly wrapping his arm around the other, in a quiet, intimate scene. They are semi-recumbent on the ground, under a soft sky of blue and pale yellow, with a southern landscape in the background, including mountains and a town bordering a lake. This work from Auvray's Italian period evokes an allegory of tenderness, marked by a protective gesture and a melancholy atmosphere.

Born in Cambrai in 1800, Félix-Henri Auvray trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he became a pupil of Baron Gros. He spent time in Italy between 1825 and 1829, refining his style through contact with historical painting. Auvray died prematurely at the age of 33, leaving an important legacy, with works such as The Last Day of Pompeii and Porcia, Daughter of Cato. His work is mainly preserved at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Valenciennes.
