A commanding bust representation of the French Emperor Napoleon I, depicted in military uniform with a cocked hat, collared tunic, and campaign greatcoat. His expression is inspired and resolute. The hollow one-piece base bears the artist’s signature on the side, and the bust features classic imperial iconography, including the monogram “N” and a radiant star.
Executed in green-patinated plaster, the finish reinforces the martial character of the subject. Late 19th century.
Height: 66 cm
Width: 46 cm
Given the atypical dimensions and the use of plaster—a material rarely seen in other versions—we hypothesize that this piece may be a working prototype used as a model for casting bronze editions.
Paul Ludwig Kowalczewski was a Polish artist born in Miel?yn, present-day Poland, in 1865, an art student at the Berlin Academy and a participant in the Great Berlin Art Exhibition with bronze figures and busts. He died in Berlin in 1910.
