"Ariane" d'après Aimé Millet (1819/1891)

Bronze statue of old cast iron (late nineteenth century period), in good condition, nuanced patina with moderate wear and tear (visible on the pictures). The Aimé Millet signature affixed to the support. Ariadne, a character from Greek mythology, daughter of King Minos and Pasiphae, is depicted in a state of distress, abandoned by Theseus on the shore of the island of Naxos... the marble original was exhibited at the Salon of 1890 and was purchased by the State for the Musée du Luxembourg.
Aimé Millet was born in Paris in 1819, studied sculpture at the Ecole des Arts-Décoratifs with David d'Angers, collaborated with the architect Viollet-le-Duc and it was in 1840 that his participation in the Salon began. Responding to numerous important commissions from the State (the Hôtel de Ville, Louvre, Orsay, etc.), he is notably the author of the monumental Vercingetorix desired by Napoleon III and erected on Mont Auxois (Site d'Alésia). He was made a Knight of the Legion of Honour in 1859 .
